Y2 Newsletter Spring 2

Curriculum Information:

In English this half term we will begin by exploring a shape poem – ‘The Tree’ by James Carter. Children will explore the writing style and continue to develop their understanding of rhyme.

After this we will study the fiction text ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’. We will focus on developing our use of conjunctions to create suspense and drama in our writing.

We will finish the half term by writing a non-fiction explanation text. We will be exploring the structure of an explanation text before writing our own.

Our Author this half term is Roald Dahl; we will be reading the text ‘George’s Marvellous Medicene’.

This half term we will begin with measurement in maths. We will learn how to read scales before estimating, measuring, comparing and ordering mass, lengths and heights.

We will then study fractions. We will be finding thirds and quarters of both numbers and objects. We will begin to identify equivalent fractions and explore the importance of fractions having equal parts.

Finally, we will study time. We will learn how to tell the time using quarter past and quarter to on an analogue clock. We will also learn to tell the time to 5-minute intervals and be able to sequence intervals of time.

This half term our Science unit is Space. We will begin by learning by discussing theories of how space was formed. We will learn the names of the planets, as well as the impact the sun and moon have on Earth. We will finish the unit by discovering what causes day and night.

Our Geography unit this half-term is We are Britain. We will learn all about the four nations which make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain. We will study seaside towns, mountains, rivers and castles. Knowledge Organisers will be sent home. Please learn the content with your children.

Enrichment Opportunities:

This term we will have a Science Workshop (26/04/2021) as well as the opportunity to learn the recorder.

We will also be welcome to attend a multi-games after school club with Mr Scott.

 

Key Dates:

Pupils must come to school wearing their PE kits on a Friday; we will hold our PE lessons on this day.

Homework is set on Friday and is due back every Tuesday.
