Information about our music curriulum can be found here.

We take great pride in being able to offer our pupils multiple opportunities to learn and play a wide range of instruments.  Pupils in Year 2 have the opportunity to learn and play the recorder. Our Year 4 pupils are given the opportunity to learn and play the Djembe and Dhol drums. These additional lessons are taught by music specialists from the local authority.

Our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils can also opt for an elective lessons in the Ukuele.  Having access to physical instruments enhances the children’s creative ability and understanding of what they have learnt.

Performances

As part of our musical provision, pupils have the opportunity to perform regularly to a large audiences. This takes place with their peers once a term during a musical concert, where parents and carers are invited into school to observe the pupils progress in performing music. Through this engagement, pupil voice indicates that they are much more likely to pursue music throughout their education and beyond.

In addition to this, we also take part in the Spring and Summer local authority galas. Children then have the experience in performing with a wider range of musical peers from all over Birmingham in venues like the Symphony Hall and Birmingham Conservatoire. This is also a great opportunity for pupils to witness some of the creative musicians and vocalists who have gone on to enjoy music in Secondary and University settings.

At the end of their musical journey at Nechells, Year 6 have the opportunity to produce and perform their own ‘Leavers Production’. This will be a culmination of knowledge and skills learnt, but also a chance for them to use their own creative flare in front of a live audience.
